MacBook notch apps compared, with developers in mind

Notch apps turn the black cut-out at the top of a MacBook screen into something useful: music controls, a place to drop files, timers and, lately, your AI coding limits. Here is how the main ones compare, with an eye on what developers need.

Compiled from each app’s own site, README or App Store page on 5 October 2026. Prices marked “per reviews” could not be read from the vendor directly. CapaTheNotch is our app. Written by , who builds CapaTheNotch.

Short answer. Free and open source: Boring Notch. Polished and paid: NotchNook, or Alcove if you want it minimal. Everything in one, AI limits included: Vorssaint or Notchy. A notch for working with AI agents and being on calls: CapaTheNotch (limits, teleprompter, dictation, music, shelf).

What matters for developers

AI usage limits

If you code with Claude Code, Codex or OpenCode, a limit you can see beats one you hit. Vorssaint, Notchy, OneNotch, NotchBuddy and CapaTheNotch show them in or near the notch. They differ in what they read to get the numbers; the usage tracker comparison goes through that app by app.

Calls and recordings

A notch app sits right under the camera, which makes it a natural place for a teleprompter. None of the general notch apps above has one; CapaTheNotch does, and there is a whole category of notch teleprompters compared here.

What it keeps

A shelf or clipboard history sees what you copy, and developers copy tokens. Look for apps that skip password-manager copies and don’t write history to disk. CapaTheNotch keeps its Shelf and clipboard only in memory, ignores anything marked as a password by 1Password or KeePassXC and anything copied from Passwords or Keychain Access, and asks macOS to keep the clipboard out of screen sharing (which has limits).

Install friction

Boring Notch and CapaTheNotch are not notarized, so macOS asks you to approve them once in Privacy & Security. Vorssaint is notarized; NotchBuddy is on the Mac App Store.

Which one to pick

CapaTheNotch in one paragraph

It shows how much is left in the five-hour and weekly windows of any two of Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode Go, without reading Claude Code or Codex tokens. Next to that: a teleprompter that scrolls under the camera, dictation recognised on the Mac by the GigaAM model (Russian for now), music controls for any player in Control Center, and a Shelf for files, screenshots and copied text. Kapa, a small cyan bell, shows how things are going. Every module except the limits is off until you turn it on. The trade-offs: Apple Silicon and macOS 14+ only, not notarized, and a young project.

FAQ

What is the best free notch app for Mac?

Boring Notch is the best-known free, open-source one (GPL-3.0). Vorssaint and Atoll are also free and open source; Notchy is free but closed source. CapaTheNotch is free and MIT-licensed, with a narrower, developer-focused set of features.

Is NotchNook worth paying for?

NotchNook is one of the most polished paid notch apps, with music, calendar, a file tray with AirDrop and a webcam mirror. Reviews have noted calendar loading issues and overlap with fullscreen apps, so use the free trial first.

Which notch app shows Claude Code and Codex limits?

Vorssaint, Notchy, OneNotch, NotchBuddy and CapaTheNotch all show AI usage limits. CapaTheNotch also covers OpenCode Go and reads Claude Code and Codex without their tokens.

Do notch apps work on Macs without a notch?

Many do, with a floating pill or island on Macs without a notch and on external displays: Notchy, DynamicLake, OneNotch, MediaMate and Seam say so. Check each app before buying.

Why does macOS warn when I open some notch apps?

Boring Notch and CapaTheNotch are not notarized by Apple, so the first launch needs “Open Anyway” in System Settings → Privacy & Security. Vorssaint is signed and notarized.
